C Family's Halloween 2016

Leave A Note
All right, let's take a break for a few.  I've been doing school for hours now, and I feel like my head needs some time off even just for a few minutes.  I've been dragging myself today, actually, just to get stuff done.  I haven't been feeling too good for a few days now.  But just like what the commercial I always see on TV says, "Parents cannot take sick leave".  I believe I started feeling worse after we went out on Halloween to take the kids trick-or-treating.  But, I don't mind at all.  I'm happy with the fact that our babies had a blast.  I just think it has something to do with being out in that cold night with no sweater on.

Our 3 Little Monsters

Anyway, we took our kids to a local church in our area, which hosted a fun-filled Harvest Fest.  It was so much fun that even myself and my husband had a great time.  Apparently, most people from our place go to that event every year, that's why there were so many people there that night.  It was so awesome to see all the kids in their cute/funny/unique costumes, and of course, the parents as well!  Some dressed up, some didn't, like us.  Well, we were thinking about getting us costumes, but decided not to, at the last minute.  The kids got theirs, by the way, so don't worry.  And they got to choose who they wanted to dress up like for Halloween.  Kai dressed up as Optimus Prime.  Gabe's choice was, Storm Shadow (Ninja costume), and for our little Princess, she dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood.  Initially, she wanted to be Cinderella.  But she changed her mind after she saw a photo of herself dressed in Little Red Riding Hood costume on Halloween (2012), when she was 1 year old.  Good thing, their Papa hasn't bought their costumes yet, when she decided she wanted something different, or else, it would have been a waste of money.  Trust me when I say that, that girl won't stop till she gets what she wants.  And I am a hundred percent sure she would've kept asking for the "right costume", had we bought her something she decided on not wanting to wear anymore.  My husband said, she got that attitude from me.  Ha!  I think that's contestable...

Saturday 9: St. Patrick's Day

Leave A Note

Saint Patrick's Day (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig) is a religious holiday celebrated internationally on 17 March. It is named after Saint Patrick (c. AD 387–461), the most commonly recognised of the patron saints of Ireland. It is observed by the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland),[1] the Eastern Orthodox Church and Lutherans. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century, but has gradually become more of a secular celebration of Irish culture.

(source: Wikipedia)

1. St. Patrick's Day is March 17th (Thursday). Do you celebrate and wear green? Drink Green Beer? Ignore it?
- Being a Filipino, I really am not accustomed to celebrating St. Patrick's Day regardless of the fact that I am married to an American and living here in the US now. This year would be my second St. Patrick's Day, but it's going to be pretty much a normal day in our household. I can't say we totally ignore it, but we don't follow the traditional ways of celebrating this occasion. The only thing, I should say, that I started somewhat "following" is, wearing something that at least has a green color on it to basically avoid "getting pinched". [hehehe]

2. If a leprechaun told you that you could have any amount of money from his pot of gold but it had to be a specified amount for a specified item, how much would you ask for and what would it be for?

- Just one item? Hmmm...I'd probably ask for $5M!! No, seriously I'd ask for that big amount. And what would it be for? To buy us a nice house that's big enough for us and the rest, get a car and use some to help needy people :)

3. One of the symbols of St. Patrick's Day is the leprechaun. Name a celebrity that you think would look good as a leprechaun. Name a celebrity that would look ridiculous as a leprechaun. Is there any one celebrity that would make a really scary leprechaun?

- For the first one, I would pick Dakota Fanning :) She's just too adorable!! For the ridiculous one, probably Will Ferrell :) He's naturally funny already and I like him. :) And for the scary one, Derek Mears, the guy who's best known for his role as Jason in the movie Friday the 13th.

4. For a prize of $1,000,000,000 you are challenged to make yourself a costume for a St. Patricks Day party. The ONLY rules are that you aren't allow to use clothing and it has to be green. Using anything other than clothing, describe your costume to us using ANYTHING else in the house.
- A green-colored gown fit for a leprechaun with matching slippers made out of cardboard boxes and paper towels. :)

5. What day of the week is your busiest? Tell us about your schedule.
- Usually the weekdays when my husband is at work from dawn till dusk. I am the only one taking care of the kids and doing as much household chores as I can. He helps me out a lot on weekends.

6. No matter what's going on in your life, what always makes you smile?

- The thought that I am truly blessed for having a great husband, 2 beautiful and healthy boys, and now, a baby girl on the way. :)

7. Of all the clothes you own, what do you feel most comfortable wearing, and why?
- Jeans and shirts. I am able to move around more comfortably.

8. On what television show—either past or present—would you like to make to make a guest appearance, and what role would you play?
- Full House (Korean TV Series). I would love to play the role as Justin's (played by Rain) love interest even just for one appearance. [hehehe] I just like him a lot!! ;)

9. What else is on your mind? Go ahead and rant.
- I can't believe that it's been almost 2 years since I got here in the US and I can't wait to go home for a visit. I just miss my family so much and it does suck being this far away from them and not being able to see them whenever I want to. And I miss Filipino foods!! It's even harder now that I am pregnant. I crave for foods that I can never have!! :(

Remembering Ramadan (Eid Mubarak!!)

Leave A Note
Few years ago, I remember spending Ramadan with my good friends from Saudia, Talal and his two older brothers, Bader and Bander who, are married to Filipino women (Ate Rosel and Ate Evelyn), and their cousin, Samer. There were nights I was invited to come over to their place and together, we had iftur (supper or evening meal to break the daily fast during Ramadan).

It is known that during the Islamic month of Ramadan, participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn to sunset. To them, fasting is meant to teach a person patience, sacrifice, and humility. It is also during this time that they fast for the sake of God and they offer prayer more than usual. They ask for forgiveness for their past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from every day evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds.

Today, they celebrated Eid el-Fitr or the Festival of Breaking the Fast. And along with it, my Ramadan memories came flashing back before my eyes.

It's not easy to fast. It really takes patience to be able to last a whole day with no food and water. You have to learn how to sacrifice your needs like eating or drinking whenever you feel like doing so because it's not allowed. It sure did teach me those valuable lessons that I should say, had stayed with me up to these days. Not only that, I already experienced myself how it is like to feel really hungry and not be able to eat anything to even lessen it. I learned how to think of others. I feel sad for those who only get to eat once a day, especially those who, sometimes go on for days without eating anything. Now, if I have something extra, it goes to those who need it more than I do.

While I was fasting, I avoided places where I can smell nice food and see people eating. My friends in school would always tease me when they're eating something in front of me because they knew I wouldn't ask them to give me some. Believe me, it was never easy to resist but I was able to do so. Whenever I started feeling hungry or thirsty, I always wanted to just sleep and wake up when it's already time for iftur. But most of the time, I was wide awake so I had no choice but to endure hunger and thirst at the same time! I just let myself think that right after maghrib, I can eat as much as I want to until suhoor before the fajr. I remember sitting with my Saudi friends in circle during every meal, with one big plate in the middle (biryani rice and the meat all in one) and just using our right hands while eating. It's a tradition that Saudi people practice. After every meal, we would sit and have tea while chitchatting or simply watching TV. Dessert always followed after that :) I don't know how's that, but we preferred eating dessert after drinkig tea. Then, if we still had enough time, we would go out for a walk and if ever ended up feeling hungry, hot and spicy chicken shawarma was always there to quiet our noisy tummies. Hehehe [Oh, that just made me start missing my favorite Arabic food ;( ]

There's no doubt I will observe Ramadan again :) I just had to stop this year because I have lost so much weight and I need to gain some of it back. Once I'm fit enough, I'll definitely fast again - maybe next Ramadan :) Inshallah!!

Today, Talal and I greeted each other Happy Eid through SMS. He even sent me pictures of his two younger sisters, Asraa, 6 and Gaya, 2 - both in Saudia right now. Talal is living in Dagupan and since he left Manila in 2006 to study there, we haven't met till now. I miss that "gentle giant" (I call him by that name sometimes because he's so tall) and how I want to see him again. I miss the happy moments we all shared together, our crazy talks, singing Arabic songs together, problem-sharing, and I miss Kuya Bader's jokes. They're the nicest Arab people I know and I'm glad we became friends and are still friends up to now. My husband and I were supposed to meet Talal in Baguio when we went there in May, but at the last minute, the plan changed because one of Talal's friends asked him to go with him to Ilocos at the time. I'm convincing him to come here to Manila, but he always gives me the same answer - he hates Manila because of too much pollution and noise. Well, I still am not giving up the chance of seeing him one of these days.

I also greeted my other good friend, Ameer who, told me in his text message that he never really felt it was Eid today. I somehow understood how he must have been feeling. He's away from his family and though he has his older brother here and a niece, still he said he didn't enjoy celebrating Eid all by himself. Well, I hope Ahmed or Wissam will do something to make him smile as he said he's going to spend time with them tomorrow. [hehehe] He deserves a break.

Anniversary or Christmas?

Leave A Note
Since deployment is almost over and our first wedding anniversary is fast approaching, my husband and I couldn't help now but talk about what we're going to do to celebrate our anniversary. During our phone conversation just an hour ago, he said that he would love to spend our anniversary and Christmas with me and the rest of our family, but that is so close to impossible - he can't take leave from work for more than a month!! He then asked me what would I prefer more; celebrating our first anniversary together or him being with me this Christmas. I only have to choose one, obviously though I wanted to say - BOTH!! It was like being asked to choose one from 2 shirts with exactly the same color and design. It was a bit hard for me to give him an answer right away. Of course, I would love to spend our first anniversary together because just like what he said to me, First Year Anniversary only happens once in a lifetime and he would never want to miss it, but I know it would also be great if he could stay for the holiday and be with me and our family. My uncle's family will be hosting a reunion (his wife's side) this Christmas and he's been asking me if my husband could attend - I said I'm not sure. I also would love him to experience what it's like celebrating Christmas here in the Philippines. But I know right now, it's just not possible.

I'm still kind of confused, though we've already agreed on the "anniversary" thing. I still am hoping he'd be able to stay here for Christmas, even if he needs to be back before New Year. Anyway, there's still time to talk about that and I know, in God's own good time, things will fall into their right place. And just like what our grandma would always tell us, if it's God's will, it will happen no matter what. Just pray. Amen.

A Special Birthday Card

2 Sweet Notes
This is just one of the many gifts my husband, John gave me on my birthday. He sent me a parcel with some other stuff he bought from the places he's been to on this deployment. What makes this card very special is, it's my very first birthday card as a "Wife" :) When I first saw the card and read what's written on the cover, my eyes welled-up with tears of joy. I couldn't even discern the exact feeling I felt that day because I was just too overwhelmed with mixed emotions.

Celebrating my first birthday as a married woman is something I consider special. For me, all my "first-time experiences" are special ;) They are experiences that only happen once in your whole life and I want to remember mine for the rest of my days and just as special as they made me feel at that particular moment in my life. They are memories that we can never go back to and even if something similar happens again, still nothing would beat the first-time-experience. I don't know if this is still within the range of sanity, but I'm just that kind of person who treasures even the simplest things in this life that I believe are worth keeping. I just love life and every single thing about it that makes it worth living.

My husband's message inside the card made me cry even more. I felt his love and sincerity in every word he wrote. I couldn't say a word while reading the whole card. For a while, I was just there sitting and staring at the card inarticulately. Deep in my heart, I was thanking God for giving me such a wonderful, loving, caring, thoughtful, and just a great husband. My heart was inundated with love and longing to hold him in my arms and to tell him how much I love him while looking straight into his eyes. In between reading and crying, I would find myself holding the card close to my heart. It was my only way of hugging him at that very moment. All I could think of the whole time was John. Looking at the card was like looking at his face and seeing him smiling right back at me. I was envisaging that he was right in front of me, holding my hands and looking straight into my eyes while telling me how much he loves me. I was missing him more than I could admit to myself. More than I could ever tell.
This is also the first card I got since he's been on deployment; my first ever "sent-from-a-deployment-card". It's not really easy to take something like this in, but I am dealing with it. I was so happy receiving a card from my husband, but knowing he's out there, at the same time, my heart was doleful. My mind was entirely with him the whole time. I was thinking and asking myself, "What's really the use of me celebrating my birthday when my own husband couldn't even be with me right now?!" But, I know he'd rather have me enjoy my time than to just sit there and worry too much. I know he's all right because God's watching over him. It's just that, I can never not be worried a hundred percent, not until I know he's just right next to me; safe and sound.

This card will always remind me that even if he was not with me to celebrate my birthday, he did make sure he's able to let me know and feel that no matter the distance, he's always with me by heart and that he really do love me. It's the smallest and simplest things he does for me that make me fall deeper in love with him everyday. He knows that what really makes me happy are the things that money can't buy. I am not after expensive gifts - big or small. You can already put a smile on my face even with a 20-peso worth of cotton candy ;) That's how shoal my happiness is. For me, simple gestures showing your sincerity and love will always be the best present I could ask for. It's always the thought that counts :)

Before I slid the card back into its envelope, I kissed it and held it close one more time while uttering, "I love you, John with all of my heart!"

Countless Thanks, Ate Rose!!
